Visitors New to The Little Egypt Area... first Ask The Question "How Did Little Egypt Get Its Name"? Well... The Answer is Uncertain... but The Consensus is that it had More to Do with a "Series of Unfortunate Events"... than with Geography! It seems that there was a Very Hard Winter... back in 1830-31... that brought Sub-Zero Temperatures and More Than 20 Inches of Snow. Combined with an Early Frost... and Deep Snows that Lasted up till May... much of The Crops were Killed. But Southern Illinois had Escaped The More Extreme Elements of The Winter that Year... and had Enough Harvest Crops to Share. Thus... The Trek of The Northern Illinois Farmers to Southern Illinois... in Its Resemblance to "The Sons of Jacob going down to Egypt for Corn"... Inspired The Bible Versed People of The Area to Call Southern Illinois "Egypt"... which later became "Little Egypt". For Some Reason... The Name Stuck... and The Rest Is History!
At Least... That's One Story!
